  1. Hello
my name is Steve Jones and I live in Manchester, England. My father, recently deceased, never knew his father but through many years of research and triangulation through autosomal DNA at Ancestry I established with reasonable certainty that his father was a descendant of George W Hawes (England 1809-1868).

I have traced back from George W Hawes to the Hawes family from Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, England where my earliest confirmed ancestor Henry Hawes (1655-1705) lived. A marble stone at the local church state that Henry’s family had lived in that parish for many generations. Through further research I have found Princes Risborough was an active area for lollards / puritans who were persecuted as such in the early 16th century (c 1520) and some Hawes people are named as being at lollard meetings at that time.

Richard Hawes and Ann Clapp from Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire were on board the Truelove which left for Massachusetts in 1635 as part of the Great Migration. Great Missenden is very close to Princes Risborough and they would have been part of the same puritan preaching group.

I have not been able to tie the Truelove Richard Hawes to ‘my’ Henry Hawes but I am sure they are related.

However I have done a Big Y DNA test at FTDNA and all my matches have come up as US Hawes in the US (including Richard Simrall Hawes etc) who are descended from Samuel Hawes c 1699. This suggests that this Samuel Hawes, who connects us via the Y line, is also part of the same family that were on the Truelove but I have seen no evidence or papers that would support this theory. I’m sure this possible link must have been investigated previously?

I would be delighted to share more information and also to join your association if possible (is it possible to pay via PayPal?).

    Yours
    Steve Jones

    1. Hi Steve,
I too am in Manchester and my great Grandmother was part of the Hawes family from princes risborough. My ancestors moved to North London.
I would be interested to hear more about your studies as myself and another cousin have traced back the family quite a way.
Hope you are safe and well

      1. Hi Eve, so sorry to have missed your message from Nov 2021.

I no longer believe I am descended from the Princes Risborough Hawes; confusion arises because there were two John Hawes b 1770 in East London; one was the son of Thomas Hawes descended from Princes Risborough and Martha Kebbell and I assumed this was the one who married Harriot Barons in 1793 especially as Thomas Hawes and many of his ancestors were all admitted to Company of Ironmongers.

However I subsequently discovered that my John Hawes was the son of John Hawes (1735-1810) and there are multiple proof points to support this. The father John Hawes was also admitted to the Company of Ironmongers in 1768 and was introduced by William Hawes a grocer who was descended from Princes Risborough and worked in the same area of the City of London as John. But there is nothing to link John and William’s lines other than this introduction.

I would be very interested to share notes as I have a lot of info on the Hawes in North London.
        Best wishes
        Steve
